Fochriw Colliery (SO 102 052)
Prior to the sinking of the 2 shafts which came to be known as Fochriw No1 (Upcast – north) and No2 (Downcast – south) Pits, there were many other shafts sunk in the immediate vicinity. Some of these were trial shafts.
The following items were recorded in newspapers at the time.
“31 January 1857 edition of The Star. Company are preparing to sink a new suite of coal pits at Vochryw.”
“17 October 1857 edition of The Star and MJ? Tenders sought for sinking two pits on the property of the Dowlais Iron Co. at Dowlais. Now down forty yards and permanent winding engines are erected and at work”.
“17 December 1859 edition of The Star and MJ?. The Vochryw Pits commenced by the Dowlais Iron Co. some five years ago are now erected and at work.”
