Under the National Coal Board, sweeping changes took place in the south Wales Coalfield. Ogilvie Colliery was subjected to a multi-million project which involved a totally new coal preparation plant, the raising of the pit bottom in the north (downcast) shaft by 80 yards and the driving of new roadways. Electric traction was also introduced and my father, Philip Lindsay Coggan became the mechanic in charge of the operation and maintenance of these locos which were manufactured by English Electric
