At the beginning of the last century there were numerous collieries, drifts and levels working in, and around the area; today there are no major concerns. Most of the small mines had already become exhausted by the time the Iron Industry was in decline. Further down the valleys larger and deeper pits were being sunk. It had been inevitable even in the Powell Duffryn days that the smaller works should be closed and give way to the highly mechanised modern collieries.
