Events Relating to the Improvements
From the recorded events, it is obvious that work on these improvements must have been going on for many years and his source of knowledge of electrical engineering is a complete mystery. However, it is evident that his expertise was such that it enabled him to register the following Letters of Patent.
The first is numbered 5154 dated 1902 entitled “Improvements in Locks for Locking Oil-pots and Bonnets to Miners’ Safety Lamps: and in Magnets for Use in Unlocking the same”, which was applied for on 1 March 1902 and accepted on 1 May 1902.

The second is numbered 8363 dated 1902 entitled “Improved Igniting Device for Miners’ Safety Lamps and the like” was applied for on 10 April 1902 and accepted on 2 April 1903. However, some difficulties must have arisen since the complete specification was left with the Patent Office some months after the application date, on 9 January 1903.
The third is numbered 9522 dated 1902 entitled “Improvements in Miners’ Safety Lamps and Apparatus connected therewith” was applied for on 24 April 1902 and accepted on 23 April 1903. However, as with the previous patent the complete specification was left with the Patent Office some months after the application date, on 26 January 1903.
