In April 1911 a half acre of land adjacent to the existing school was bought for £20.
It was not until September 1912 that a letter was written to the building committee of the County Council recommending that a new school be built. The report stated that there was a terrible stench in the school and the children could not exist in such an atmosphere.
During April 1903 a member of the mining evening class was presented with a silver plated tiepin on the occasion of his marriage and a “novel” flashlight photograph was taken of the class.
Evening classes held at Fochriw school in 1911-12 included English, Preparatory Mathematics, Elementary Science and Drawing, Ambulance, Art, Needlework, Practical Mathematics, Principles of Mining, Geology, Vocal Music, Welsh.

18 April 1896 Welsh Grammar Class at Fochriw. Tutor Rev J Jones. On 11 April – outing to Pontsarn – Morning games – Meal at Refreshment Rooms – Mrs Lewis Hostess. Afternoon visits to places of interest in the locality. All following a successful term of lessons in Welsh “Oes y byd i’n Iaith Gymraeg”
15 May 1897 Welsh Grammar Class tutor Rev James J Jones. Outing to Weston. Train to Cardiff. Waverley boat to Weston. Afternoon trip to Worle and Kewstoke.
17 September 1898 Welsh class. Tutor Rev. James Jones. Examination last April 10 entries. 8 firsts, 2 seconds. Firsts E Cole, M A Lewis, Thomas Lewis, Elizabeth Jones, Gwen Jones, Evan Jones, Elizabeth Evans, Evan L Thomas and Evan Williams. Seconds Margaret A Ballard and Thomas Ballard.
Pupils from Fochriw who attended Bargoed, Pengam & Hengoed County Schools had to walk to Pontlottyn to catch a train. This situation had lasted for a number of years but since the number of pupils was increasing, following representations from the Council, a new train service was provided from Fochriw during February 1922.
During August 1960 Fochriw Junior Mixed and Infants School became two schools – one for Juniors under Mr. Bryn Davies, and one for Infants under a head to be appointed.
