All of the compressed air requirements for both mines were normally served by an electric compressor sited at the No. 2 mine. However the cold weather had damaged this, and portable diesel compressors were on hire. The air was delivered to the workings through steel pipes, at a working pressure of 550 KN/m3.

Plantation Level

This again was an old DIC level and was worked by the Llewellyns during the 1960/70’s. The coal seam worked was locally known as the “upside-down seam” since it comprised, from the top down, 2ft 2 inches of muck, 1 ft of coal, 6 inches of muck, fireclay with a shiny hard bottom which was the reverse composition of all other local coal seams.

This was not worked for long since the composition of the seam did not improve.
